IHSW and a Desperately Important Thing

Click now for JiffNotes

Wondering what this is all about? Click the image!

The new season of Daredevil dropped on Netflix on Friday, and we managed to slam through the whole thing over the weekend! I don't know if that helped or hindered my stitching...you would think that much TV time would have helped, but this show is very suspenseful and not great to stitch to! It's a fantastic series, but INCREDIBLY graphically violent, so be forewarned! I'm still not "caught up" on April from The Snowflower Diaries...
I thought I was going to be able to take the day off on Thursday, but I had too many meetings scheduled, so I'm taking off next Wednesday and Thursday instead. I had vacation days that carried over from last year, and if I don't use them by March 31st, I will "lose" them!!

And now for the Desperately Important Thing (not really). You all know about Easter Eggs, right? No, not colored chicken eggs, but the little hidden gems that are sometimes put in DVDs/BluRays/computer games/etc. I saw a great one pop up on Twitter that I had to share. Go to Vogue UK, wait until the page is done loading, then using your keyboard, enter the Konami code: Up arrow, Up arrow, Down arrow, Down arrow, Left arrow, Right arrow, Left arrow, Right arrow, b, a...then keep hitting a for as long as you are amused. =D This also works on Wired UK, although with less variety. Sadly, the sites on this side of the pond do not have the same embedded awesomeness!

I came, I bit my nails, I stitched, I wasted a lot of time with velociraptors.

The Geekend That Was, 5/19 (The S is for Shopping, Right?)

Did you all see Star Trek?? If you're a Benedict Cumberbatch fan, you MUST. We ended up seeing it Thursday night (around dinner time), which was awesome because the theater was fairly empty so there was no one behind me kicking my seat or making inane comments (well...at least not during the movies...we won't talk about previews), or in front of me checking their text messages. Anyway, it was excellent. I can never get enough Karl Urban (Bones), but at least the Scotty content was good. On a related note, Karl Urban is going to be in a new JJ Abrams show this fall...it looks pretty good.

So! This weekend was International Hermit and Stitch Weekend.
(You can click the picture to see others who were participating.) There wasn't as much hermitting as I thought there'd be! Most of it happened Sunday, when it was disgustingly rainy all day. After church and a very yummy brunch at Octane, featuring The Little Tart Bakeshop (sausage, potato and kale turnover and an apple berry crumble tart...NOM), we headed home and continued trying to repair the milk steamer. We had to give it up as a lost cause, unfortunately. Then I turned my attention to stitching. Well...and knitting. The socks are nearly finished!

I did get some more done on my ornament for the month...

...and Toccata I. I am seriously behind!

We were out most of Saturday...it was free museum day, so we couldn't resist a trip to the High Museum at that price. =)

Afterwards, we went clothes shopping (mainly for Michael, although of course I managed to find a few things!)

And on a completely random note, in case you're excited about new episodes of Arrested Development, here's a guide to help you prepare yourself: previously, on Arrested Development. You're welcome. And, I apologize in advance for the time you'll waste there. =)

JiffNotes
There was stitching, there was eating, there was a movie, there was a modicum of culture. And I managed not to punch anyone when we walked through the modern art (sic) section of the museum! Sorry...art is supposed to inspire emotion, but unfortunately modern art (sic) only makes me very, very angry.

I think we pretty much know how my weekend went: I laid on the couch. I didn't even make it to choir practice; the thought of singing for two hours made me want to faint. I'm seriously sick of being sick (doesn't take me long, does it??) I gave my body all this rest and it doesn't seem to be rewarding me like it usually does...you know, BY GETTING BETTER. I worked from home today in the recliner, since the whole getting ready process was still exhausting. I have the day off tomorrow, but I REALLY hope I can go in on Wednesday.

I did get a corner of Random Thoughts done last night while watching Once Upon a Time.
Man, I love that show.

A couple more random notes...
  • I don't often link to other posts, but I read one today that I thought was just fascinating...do you know who Kitchener stitch, raglan sleeves and cardigans are named for? It's all related to the Great War...take a look here at Mixed Martial Arts and Crafts.
  • Victorian Motto Shoppe is having a fantastic giveaway for Christmas, if you don't know already! (If you mention I sent you, I get some extra entries, but I'm the last one to know about this, right??)

Still sick, still stitching. The real question is, are YOU sick of NaBloPoMo yet??

The Geekend That Was, 7/29 (Winner and Spoiler Edition)

Click now for JiffNotes

Thursday night, I slept for 10 hours, and I could have easily slept more if work panic had not roused me. I told the hubby that I'm pretty sure I was in shock on Sunday (about my dad's hospital stay), and the rest of the week I was incredibly tense. I was exhausted all week; I'm not sure how my mom and sisters are doing it, being at the hospital all day. My dad is doing much better; he's on solid foods now, but he still has a long way to go. Thank you again for all the prayers.

Friday, I wanted to go spend the day with my dad in the hospital...Michael even came home at lunch so he could shuttle me over there (we only have the one car, and although I could have easily made the 20-25 minute walk, it was HOT). Unfortunately, from the time I woke up, I was working. So, I hauled my computer to the hospital and worked until 6. =(

Of course, Friday night we watched the opening ceremony. I hear the NBC commentary was horrific (I try to tune it out); I blame Matt Lauer. While most of we Americans did need the connection between healthcare and children's literature explained, for instance, we did not need the inanity of Matt explaining that Mary Poppins was coming to save the day. I seriously doubt that fewer than 95% of Americans know who Mary Poppins is!! I also blame the extreme editing it seems NBC did; I hear we missed a lot of the ceremony. Boo, NBC!

Saturday, I earned a bronze medal in the Lottlympiad! Ohhhh...sorry for the spoiler with no spoiler alert preceding it...event results before my Lottlympiad report? Just call me Brian Williams. Yup, we were out with friends for dinner Saturday night, and the one time my spouse looked up at the TV (during the 6pm-8pm Olympic showing break on NBC), he saw the results of the race that wouldn't be aired, for those of us who are cable-free, for three more hours. Double boo, NBC!! We stayed up until 2am catching up with everything we'd recorded while we were out visiting my dad and going to dinner. *yawn!*

Sunday there was more Dad-visiting, more Olympics-watching, some tomato-roasting (if you have not made "sun dried" tomatoes...YOU MUST!!) and not much more sleep.

Finally, I didn't forget about my scrapbooking software giveaway! The winner is CalamityJr!! Congrats!! Please email me at heather at lottloft dot com and I'll send you information about how to get the software!

JiffNotes
This is not the first time I've wished I could watch BBC. I must say, though, that with all my NBC-bashing, I still <3 Bob Costas in a giant way.

Also, I apologize in advance to my non-US readers...my (upcoming!) Lottlympiad coverage is heavily parodied from NBC coverage...so although you may not get all the jokes, I hope it's still entertaining.

The Geekend That Was, 11/27

Loooong weekend. I love it! We spent Thanksgiving with my parents, which is usually a big to-do, but my three sisters were all elsewhere. So, my parents just took Michael and I out for dinner to their local club, which had a fabulous buffet. I was ready to leap into the middle of the sweet potato casserole they had and eat my way out. The bad news: THIS MEANS NO LEFTOVERS. *sob!*

That night, Michael attempted to get us Dance Central 2 and Kinect Sports 2 for $15 at Wal-mart. After two hours, the manager finally said they hadn't gotten any Xbox games in at that location and refused to sell the ones already on the shelf for the lower price. I had a friend tell me today that his Wal-mart DID sell the ones off the rack for the advertised price. So, there is a strongly worded letter in my future and we won't be patronizing Wal-mart next year. I did manage to score Assassin's Creed II for ten smackers on Amazon, and some clothes at Anthropologie (but that was on Wednesday). It didn't feel worth it to try to brave the crowds for the 50% off sale prices, but even at 25% off, I got $546 (original price) of clothes for $112!

Friday we spent the afternoon at Michael's parents playing Settlers of Catan, eating crazy good cake, and wrapped the evening up with Christmas Cantina at the Aurora Theater. If a show that combines rock-n-roll tricycle-riding, a heartwarming military tribute and giant men in pink bunny suits sounds like your kind of thing, check it out! (It was definitely our kind of thing. I never, Never, NEVER thought I would see Triplets, from The Band Wagon, performed in real life. But there it was. Hit this link if you've never seen it. Triplets cannot be explained; it can only be experienced. And yes, that really IS Fred Astaire.)

Saturday...let's not talk about any football that may or may not have happened on Saturday and talk about us seeing The Muppets Saturday night. Definitely good; definitely some belly laughs...and NPH (Neil Patrick Harris, donchaknow?) had the best line of the movie.

Sunday both Michael and I had massive headaches (impending sinus infection, anyone?) which did nothing to make our mandatory nursery duty at church any more enjoyabletolerable. For me, it's kind of like being locked in a room with small aliens for a couple hours. What are they DOING? What do they WANT?!? WHY CAN'T THEY JUST TELL ME??!?!????

Ahem.

We spent the rest of the day belatedly watching the parade, trying to make our heads stop hurting by consuming chocolate (maybe that was just me), and finishing up Clone Wars season 3 (excellent).

In closing, allow me to share this very inspiring comment left on my last post:
UGG boots the narration of the principal snow from Australia, but it is the honest American brand. When we beginning saw UGG boots snow, do manual arouse is deeply honest, but the character how to see is a abundant feeling. But UGG boots amiableness retention feature, the snow super standard work not only make the Hollywood star upon, more let a grouping of MM lining up.

I hope abundant feeling that someday I feature amiableness retention and deeply honest narration of the principal snow. Or at least make the Hollywood star upon.

So say we all.

SYTYCD Top 20 the Second Reactions

Click now for JiffNotes

Quick thoughts from So You Think You Can Dance last night...by the way, I have NOT forgotten about the giveaway. I promise to post winners tomorrow!

Ryan & Ricky - Ew. Over Ryan; hope Ricky sticks around.

Caitlyn & Mitchell - Mitchell's refusal to really play the bad guy left the piece looking like a mentally unstable woman whose man's doing the best he can to cope with her mood swings.

Missy & Wadi - Really impressed with Missy; though she wasn't perfect, she gave it her all. Had to watch a 2nd time to even see Wadi...result: meh. He tried.

Iveta & Nick - not the best Bollywood, but not the worst. Doesn't matter; <3 Nick. Impressive that such a tall dancer can move that fast! (Your chicken legs are OK with me, Nick! =( )

Miranda & Robert - HOLY CRAP WHERE DID MIRANDA COME FROM THAT CHEST POP, WHUT??? Robert failed to annoy me.

Clarice & Jess - Clarice did an amazing job supporting herself on Jess with no help from him and having gorgeous lines. He danced like he had a vague idea of what contemporary was supposed to look like, but his moves stopped at his phalanges. Boy can spin, but please send Jess & Ryan home so Clarice can dance with Roderick (snark).

Tadd & Jordan - Competent Viennese Waltz. Tadd's "dirty little secret" makes me want to fight Debbie Reynolds for him.

Melanie & Marko - Almost cuted out at Marko messing w/Mel's ears & her reaction. Costuming was dumb but failed to screw up fabuloso characterizations and style.

Sasha & Alexander - Mostly meh. Curious to see if lack of beard mobilizes the teenyboppers.

Ashley & Chris - <3 <3 <3 His opening move...WHAT? ...although, STUPIDEST "what America doesn't know" EVAR.

Who's with me??

Fabulous!

Click now for JiffNotes

Kathy very kindly gave me this award!

I have known Kathy for...10 years, is it?? I think we met at Spirit of Cross Stitch in 1998, but I could have the year wrong. She knew I was looking for "Companions" by Teresa Wentzler, and she happened to find it in the stash exchange (she was wayyyy ahead of me in the line!) and grabbed it for me. And someday I will actually finish it, LOL!!

As I understand it, I am supposed to list five addictions and five other fabulous blogs. Hmmm...I am having a little trouble coming up with addictions. That's so strong of a word! My "addictions," what I would call things that I seek to do in exclusion of anything else, I hope, tend to be temporary in nature. For instance, I may not be able to "put down" a good book, but then that book is done. So I guess I'm listing things that have made me at least temporarily set aside anything else...
  1. Puzzle games
  2. a TV series on DVD (sadly)
  3. a really good book
  4. Needlework
  5. Chocolate
I would say 4 and 5 are more "enduring" addictions, LOL!

I hate singling blogs out, because you're all fabulous =), but I also love getting awards and suspect that others do, too. So, please peruse my sidebar for all the fabulous blogs I follow, but here is who gets the award this time around (I'm trying for people who don't have the award yet and who I've not awarded recently):
  1. Yuko - I just recently found her blog, and as I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Japan in 2003, I love seeing her pictures of her country as well as her fabulous unique craft style.

  2. Afford Your Passions - That is her current blog, but please visit her new space starting February 1...she's having a giveaway celebration! I expect the new blog to be just as fabulous as the old. =) She always has many pretty needlework finishes!

  3. Annette's Acre - More fabulous needlework eye candy.

  4. In THIS Life - Aimee raises some fabulous children, does some fabulous dyeing, crochets some fabulous stuff and otherwise posts thoughtful stuff. We may not always agree, but she always makes me think!

  5. mainley stitching - Barbara's continual stream of lovely eye candy and fabulous storytelling make her blog worth reading any day. And, it's just nice to be able to tag her with an award before anyone else, LOL!

Whew! It's always so difficult to narrow things down!!

Stimulus

Click now for JiffNotes

So, I had all these posts started a while back before work got really bad, so you're getting some "historical treats" now.... I have a stitch weekend coming up (huzzah! No work on Friday!), so expect a brief silence followed (hopefully soon) by lots of eye candy.

About two weeks after I started working full-time again, I had a sense of deja-vu. It had nothing to do with long hours or eating takeout for every meal or feeling like cleaning and laundry were an endless cycle squeezed into spare moments. It had to do with shopping. Working full-time and not having any time for hobbies, for some reason, makes me want to buy stuff. Real bad.

It started innocently enough...my old Roomba was dying a slow, pitiful death, and now I don't have time to fiddle with it or dust-mop myself. Plus, I had walked past a Brookstone a few weeks before and heard the dulcet purr of the new model (as compared to the unwieldy screech mine was making)...so much quieter than previous models. So, I headed to Linens 'n' Things with my 20% off coupon, and procured Dusty II:

But the hankering for new gadgets did not stop there. I have a coworker who is a compulsive hummer. This person will hum tunes, or tunelessly, or mutter, "OhhhHHHhhh..." throughout the day and it drives me BATTY. I have been unable to come up with a tactful way to address this, so, as any logical person would decide, I must have an iPod instead. Once my heart was set on the blue nano (sooo cute!), I discovered blue was only available in the expensive high-capacity version. *sigh* A few days later, woot.com came to my rescue with a refurbed one even cheaper than the silver-only smaller model. I've included items for scale so that everyone should be able to grasp its wee cuteness:

And the best thing? Oh, yeah, it's right there on the screen...I can now watch LOST video podcasts!! I must also point out that above the teensy iPod is a weensy bamboo crochet hook I procured at Knitch. Perfect for slipping in the sock-on-the-go bag. And it was only 2 smackers!!

The other big purchase was a recliner. Now, I never thought that Michael's design sensibilities would ever allow a recliner into our home until he was a few decades older and comfort considerations overrode his aesthetic objections. Me, I didn't care too much either way, having lived with a dad who was seldom out of his big ugly chair. Before I met Michael I wouldn't have thought it possible that a man could exist without a recliner. Anyway, we went to ADAC's annual sample sale (home of the $50 dupioni silk comforter and shams from last year) and scored this awesome leather recliner that actually manages clean lines in the midst of its insane comfort:

Finally, I give you the frog:

This purchase did not require a major investment, but I love the way he looks with our alebrijes. He comes fresh from causing an uproar at the Atlanta Downtown Tour of Lofts and Lifestyles street market. The sweet old Southern gentleman presiding over the booth that had frogs, frogs, and more frogs (along with a couple of grasshoppers) explained all about how to gently drag the stick (pictured in the frog's mouth) over the ridges on his back to mimic a croaking sound. There were BIG frogs that sound like bullfrogs, medium frogs (like this guy) that sound like garden frogs and tiny frogs that sound like tree frogs.

Michael and I were fascinated and spent a long time choosing the tone and paint job we liked best. We would have probably gone for a bullfrog if there'd been a paint job that spoke to us like this one. Anyway, in the midst of our testing, and retesting, this guy stops about 10 feet away on my right cocks his head and says, "If you do that one more time, I'm going to have to take it away."

Excuse me?

I give him my standard response to awkward social situations, which is to smile, giggle, and ignore him as I continue with what I was doing. He says again, "I am serious. That is really annoying. That frog is, like, getting on my nerves. It is like...." Here he pauses for a moment, rolls his eyes back, and his head begins to shake as if he has his phone on vibrate and for some reason has strapped it to his head. It's a little disturbing, to say the least.

Did I mention we were at an outdoor market? A public, outdoor market? Dude...walk away if you don't like it. He continues ranting for a couple minutes more, as I stare at him, waiting for him to just walk away already. Being that the artist who made the frog is standing right there, crazed homeless guy is being, like, really rude in what he's saying.

Sorry. I should be fair. He was not necessarily homeless. He could have been one of those guys that pretends to be homeless so he can scam a couple bucks toward the beer fund until the next pay day. (Yes, this has actually happened. You learn things when you live downtown.)

Anyway, he finally moves on, but not two minutes later, a guy comes right up to my shoulder and says practically in my ear, "If that were in my house, that would look like a really great chew toy for my dog."

My defensive giggle doesn't even kick in as I stare at him, aghast. Instead, he giggles manically towards his other stylish friends and mercifully continues on his way. I turn to the artist (who is now looking distinctly annoyed despite his good manners and restraint) and say, "Well, there's at least two people here that I wouldn't invite to my house!"

Happy Birthday to meme

Click now for JiffNotes

I was going to make up my own birthday meme, but that seemed like too much trouble. ;)

1. Type in your birthday (minus the year) in the search bar at Wikipedia.org
2. List three interesting facts, two births, and one death that happened on your birthday.

Three facts
1. Apropos: 1951 - The Twenty-second Amendment to the United States Constitution, limiting Presidents to two terms, is ratified.
2. Hilarious: 1964 - The government of Italy asks for help to keep the Leaning Tower of Pisa from toppling over.
3. Yawn: 1986 - The United States Senate allows its debates to be televised on a trial basis.

Two births
Dudes, I'm going more than two, because some seriously cool people were born on "my" day:
272 - Constantine I, Roman emperor (d. 337)
1807 - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, American poet (d. 1882)
1902 - John Steinbeck, American writer, Nobel laureate (d. 1968)
1930 - Joanne Woodward, American actress
1932 - Elizabeth Taylor, British-American actress
1934 - Ralph Nader, American consumer activist
1934 - Van Williams, American actor
1964 - Todd Bodine, American race car driver (this one is for Jean)
and to make up for the embarassing
1980 - Chelsea Clinton
we have what would probably be the two I listed for real:
1981 - Josh Groban, American singer
1962 - Adam Baldwin, American actor
People. Adam Baldwin! How cool is that? I just love him in "Chuck" right now, but my enjoyment is enhanced by having seen him in "Firefly". What's that? You've never seen it?!? I command you to remedy that immediately. And, you know, it's my birthday, so you have to do what I say. ;)

One death
2003 - Fred Rogers, American children's television actor (b. 1928)
*sob*

I can fit in a "Firefly" blurb nearly anywhere...
