Bandwagon, Let Me Jump on You

I have never been one to do what all the cool kids are doing, but I found a freebie mosaic-maker (which has plastered its watermark all over the collages since I didn't want to pay for the "pro" version), so I thought I'd join in the fun of reviewing my 2013 finishes.

First off, sewing finishes.
Two boxy bags, a drawstring bag, and a pillow. Not great, but I don't sew regularly since I have no sewing room and I have to haul everything out every time I want to do anything.

Next, knitting finishes!
Much more impressive! Seven pairs of socks, two sweaters (!!!), three cowls, and a mitt. The socks are, of course, due to the fact that I joined the Cookie A Sock Club. Seven pairs out of a possible twelve (if I'd knit all the patterns) isn't too bad.

Finally, stitching finishes!
Well, that is...embarrassing. Pretty much all ornaments, there. One small silk gauze pin and the perforated paper "ornament" that will be finished as a cube, I think.

I hope to finish more stitching in 2014! Tomorrow I'll post about some SALs I'm taking part in that will hopefully help me to that goal!

I finished some stuff last year, for sure, but hopefully next year's stitching total won't be so depressing.

Theme-a-licious December/January

It's a new year of themeing! A special welcome to those of you who are joining us for the first time. I have a bunch of emails I need to respond to with some great theme suggestions...I'm sorry I haven't been able to get back to all of you, but as you may have seen, things were a little crazy around here.

This is going to be the most bizarre Theme-a-licious wrap up I've ever done...because there is NO STITCHING! There is knitting...and SEWING!

First off, this is the little drawstring bag I wanted to give my niece for Christmas along with the portable iPod speaker we gave her. But getting things in the mail is always exciting, right??

This is the first time I've tried out the decorative stitches/monograms on my sewing machine. I think it turned out not too shabby. Especially since I made the bag with no directions, and also decided to try French seams, because WHY NOT?? It would have been too easy otherwise, and we can't have that, now can we??!?

While I had the sewing machine out, I finally FINALLY made the second pillow from the sewing class I took...uh...last year sometime? (And by "last year", I mean 2012...I'm not even taking advantage of New Year date flip irony.)

They look roughly the same, so I'm satisfied.

Next, I picked up Juneberry Triangle on a whim and realized I was close to finishing "Chart B", so I did. It went so quickly that I decided to also do "Chart C", which was only three rows, and that went so well I decided to do the first row of "Chart D" so I could get in a new lifeline. Aaaaand...that row probably took longer than all the other ones put together! It's why I don't have a nice scissors fob finish to show you...you know, actual stitching!

Also why I had to take a crappy flash photo.

And speaking of crappy photos, I completely forgot to take a picture of my sister's mitt (errr...might have had something to do with the fact that I finished it at 10:30pm the night before I was going to give it to her). I had her take a couple with her phone.

Actually, they aren't so bad. But they don't show the gorgeousness of this yarn (Tanis Fiber Arts Purple Label Cashmere Sock). It's a beautiful subtly variegated minty green and is THE softest yarn I've ever felt.

I might need to make myself a pair of these rather than socks (this is Cookie A Sock Club yarn). The "real" gift was antique buttons, but I thought it would be nice to have them attached to something.

Now it's time to share our plans for THIS month, which is...

Jardin January
The holidays were a little stressful...let's relax in a nice garden. Work on any piece with flowers or gardens.

Now, it just so happens that my EGA chapter's stitch-along theme for the year is "Gardens" (I may have helped finagle innocently suggested that. ;) I had intended to post a whole list of garden-related WIPs that I intend to work on, but things have been a little more hectic than I'd planned. I will be starting two pieces, though...Spring Garden Gate by Moss Creek Designs, and Spring Quakers by Rosewood Manor. I'll also be working on Shakespeare's Garden and my stumpwork piece. Oh, and Juneberry Triangle, because that totally fits with the Garden theme since it has the word "berry" in the title. See, for those of you that are new, that's how we work things around here. ;)

So how was Detritus December? Did you wrap anything up besides presents? What are your plans for Jardin January? Please add your link below (to your latest Theme-a-licious post), and visit some other Themers if you can (everyone loves comments and encouragement!) Unlike last year, there will be no check-in post on the 15th, so our next post will be on February 1st. I'll post mid-January to announce the theme for February (and the prize winner)! It's never too late to join in or send suggestions for future themes!

Finished Object Friday: Istanbul (not Constantinople)

Click now for JiffNotes

I have two...TWO!...things to show you today. First off, here is another installment in the Cookie A Sock Club, Istanbul (not Constantinople...sorry; still genetically incapable of saying one without the other):

I tried a new heel on these (short rows with wrap & turn) because I DETEST picking up gusset stitches. It looks a little strange to me and I was worried I'd feel the decrease there along the heel, but I wore these the other day and only noticed it once.

My real disappointment with these socks is how HUGE they are. It seems I'm a very loose lace knitter (which is odd to me given the death grip I have on the needles all the time). I knit the small size, and even went down a needle size, but I guess I should have gone down another needle size. That being said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the color of these (Inkwell by Miss Babs) and the lace is beautiful.

And to answer the question I know you all have, NO, I am not wearing white tights underneath these. My legs are really that white in sunlight.

Next, I finally FINALLY finished a square box that I started...back in May?? Gee whiz.

I still love my sewing machine, and although some bits of the bag are kind of wonky, I'm pretty pleased with it. It's lined an everything!

This is not for the faint of heart, though, and I gotta tell you that you should go pay those sellers on Etsy whatever they want for one of these bags!! One bit of the instructions I followed had me staring at the screen for about five minutes straight before I understood them!

That's National Blog Not At All Month, which is what I seem to have been following for the past few months. We all know I went to London (and Oxford) for two weeks at the end of August and beginning of September (ooo, look at megalomaniacal me, thinking you all keep up with what I'm doing)--and still haven't bothered to post pictures--muttered something about work being bad--went to a Jane Nicholas class--and made more mutterings about work being bad. That has really been what's been keeping me away from the computer--work, and also this:

You are looking at the innards of my Kindle Touch. Its battery died sometime in...September? October? Anyway, I replaced the battery, but in doing so, I knocked a cable loose, which caused it to freeze up randomly. Of course, I didn't know that at the time, so I spent about three weeks figuring out how to "debrick" it (i.e., turn it from a paperweight back into a useful device), running the operator diagnostics on it, and finally taking the entire thing apart in a last-ditch attempt to make it useable before selling it for parts. Well, when I watched the video on taking it apart, I realized how loose the connection is on the cable that's right by the battery, so I fixed it. By this time, of course, I'd already ordered a new Paperwhite. So now Michael has a trusty Kindle of his own. =)

So: Work. Pretty much right when I got back, I was thrust into a project that required all my time and then some. For three weeks in October, the project team was sequestered in a room together and they brought in lunch for us. This culminated with a go-live where we were all up until 2am (fortunately, I was working from home that day). The go-live went off without a hitch! The upside to being holed up in a room all that time was that it protected me from the company's new "noise masking" system. Basically, there's now a constant, loud hiss coming from the ceiling (brown noise, not white noise, if you're interested). IT DRIVES ME INSANE. It was not as loud in the room we were in, but now that I'm back "in the wild," well...let's just say I may not be around there too much longer.

This kind of work stress meant that when I got any free time, I wanted to be outside, away from the computer!! We went to a somewhat cool, somewhat pretentious outdoor art night...

...where people danced in urban spaces...

tiny dancers are tiny
...became part of the show...

...and made artistic statements...

This last one was my favorite, actually. It was about people with dementia. The artist would paint with water on the black board, and then sit back down as the memory he'd written faded away. He wouldn't get up again until it was completely gone. I thought it was good art that made you think...unlike the giant milkshake fountain (water colored white) that was supposed to be a commentary on our super-size-me culture. It was just...ugly and uninteresting.

We visited the Botanical Gardens, where the Imaginary Worlds exhibit looked very different from when things were first planted. Earth spirit's hair is grown in...

...the bunnies hide in tall grass...

...and the frogs have mohawks!

We went on a couple hikes. We had gone to Sweetwater Creek State Park, which takes you along Sweetwater Creek...

...and by the ruins of a textile mill burned in the Civil War.

We took a little picnic lunch...

...climbed on the rocks...

...and admired the wildlife.

When this lovely fella took off, I laughed at all the people with their camera phones capturing blurred dots, because...

...zoom lens and adjustable shutter speed FTW!!

The next "hike" was really more of a walk. For some reason we thought we'd be able to drive up somewhere to see pretty leaves the day after my project went live...bwahahaha!! I slept until 11am! So we just went up to walk by the Chattahoochee River near Akers Mill. Stalker heron followed me there.

This was a very pretty walk; lots of great moss!

I did manage to stitch a little on Friday on my stumpwork piece, but the rest of the weekend I was laid up on the couch. At first I thought I was fighting off a sinus infection, but this feels different. Flu? Random cold? Who knows?! Oh, it's just nonstop excitement here, let me tell you! At least it was a great excuse to watch lots of special features off The Hobbit Blu-Ray. =) Stitching pictures soon!

I came, I overworked, I got sick. So did my Kindle, but it's better now. Also: Nature!

The Geekend That Was, 5/12

The big news from last week is that I got a new sewing machine!
I have wanted a new one because the one I have is very, very basic, and we don't always get along. A Gold Box deal popped up on Amazon for this one, and I couldn't resist! IT IS SO AWESOME!! It does all sorts of fancy stitches, even letters, and it came with more presser feet than I knew existed (there's even one just for attaching a row of sequins). But those things are just icing. The things I love (so far) are that you don't even need a foot pedal to operate it (you can start and stop it with A BUTTON), it's CRAZY easy to thread, it's got an automatic thread cutter, and it always ends with the needle down (SO handy for turning corners). I didn't have as much time to play with it as I wanted, so I didn't get anything completed. Hopefully after this weekend I'll have something to show. =)

On Saturday, we took Michael's parents on the annual "Gardens for Connoisseurs" tour to benefit the botanical gardens. Although it did sprinkle a couple of times, it was a pretty good day overall; the temperature was just perfect.
The peonies were in bloom...
...there were lots of gorgeous spaces in the nine gardens we visited.
We also went to the Botanical Gardens. (I still need to do a post on the current exhibit.) As a bonus, when we got to the Gardens, the rose show was going on!
I'll show you more in another post. =)

Theme-a-licious Obligation October Wrap-Up

I had three obligations this month: Two classes and an ornament for my sister.

The last of my sewing classes was "Aprons", where I made this "tool apron":

I have no idea what I'll use it for, but it was more about the learning process than the end product.

The supplies for my sister's ornament have not arrived yet, but I may have come up with another idea for her....

I have been trying to keep up with my stumpwork class. I'm a little behind, but hopefully I will have time to catch up this weekend. Here's where I am right now, with all the branches and leaves finished:
Some nice beads get added for berries, but not until the very last step. The bird is next!

Now it's time for...
Nail It November
What's lying around that's so close to being finished you can't stand it anymore? Get to it and finish it!

This month is all about Random Thoughts! It's time to be done!!! I also would like to finish...
  • My sister's ornament
  • My Origami Turtle (it "just" needs to be seamed and have its edge knit)
  • Silver Rose, a hat I stopped knitting halfway through

What's on your list that just needs to be FINISHED, ALREADY??!?

So did your Obligation October go? What's on tap for Nail It November? (See what I did there? ;) Please add your link below (to your check-in post), and visit some other Themers if you can (everyone loves comments and encouragement!) Our next post will be on the 15th, when we'll check in for Nail It November. And don't worry if you haven't posted before...just jump in whenever.

The Geekend That Was, 10/28

Click now for JiffNotes

The weekend felt productive, even though there were a lot of chores that didn't get done! Saturday morning I had my final sewing class, so I hauled the machine to a storage facility one last time (they're still in temporary digs). I wasn't that excited about the class, because it was "aprons". I already have three (cooking) aprons, so I decided to make the "tool belt" apron (it also required only 1/2 yard of fabric, which I had lying around...you might recognize it =).

In the end, I was SO glad I went to class. I don't think I've ever taken a class in which I haven't learned something, and this one was no exception. So without further ado, behold my apron!

Action shot!

I'm pretty pleased with how the pleated pockets turned out (they're pleated so you can cram more stuff in 'em).

I also learned that bias tape is awesome, and my previous failures with it were because...well, because I didn't know what the heck I was doing, but also because I was trying to use it without thinking about the construction of what I was making, and because I wasn't pinning in advance of sewing! I will always, always, ALWAYS pin now.

Flush with success, I decided I was going to finally try to replicate this bag, which I bought to hold Les Rubans.

I wanted another one like it to house Sapphire Star (which is much smaller and would be swallowed in this size of bag). This was the best bag I had for it!

So sad. So check out what I came up with!

I didn't have a pattern other than the existing bag, so I just winged it.

Now Sapphire Star has its own custom bag. Much better.

After I finished the bag, we went and voted! Voting was in a library branch, so afterwards we were involuntarily sucked in to look at the books. They create their own gravitational pull, you know. We may have brought home a few.

On Sunday after church, we met some friends for lunch and then went to a dedication for the new sorority house on campus. When I lived there, 14 people lived in four rooms in the house. Now about 40 live in 20 rooms, and there's a huge kitchen with a chef! (Who, as an aside, was a bit too handsome to be a chef in a sorority house, if you ask me.) When we got home, I demanded cocoa because I was so cold. I mean, I was told that when it got cold, there would be cocoa, so it was only fair. What's the point of cold weather if there's no cocoa, anyway?

Sewing class has, at the very least, given me confidence to try and figure things out on my own.

Theme-a-licious Altius August Wrap-Up

My sewing classes continued this month. We learned to make bags! I got some foam mats for blocking knitting, and I needed some kind of containment system. =)
I think it worked out pretty well, considering that I showed up at class with various fabric and no idea what kind of bag I was going to make!

Behold, my stunning box stitching for strap stability!
I'm really excited that I can now make any size bag I want.

I did get some other things done, but due to my work armageddon, I STILL haven't gotten the Lottlympiad posts up, and those projects are part of those posts.

Now it's time for...
September Smalls
We all love gadgets, and none better than the teensy tools and holders we make ourselves. Let's stitch some smalls--needlebooks, fobs, biscornus, scissors keeps, pincushions--or knit some teensy things--amigurumi, jewelry, sachets....

So how did your Altius August take off? Please add your link below (to your check-in post), and visit some other Themers if you can (everyone loves comments and encouragement!) Our next post will be on the 15th, when we'll check in with September Smalls! And don't worry if you haven't posted before...just jump in whenever.
